Getting started with torrent files

By Nathon Tinmon of TGB

BitTorrent is a distributed file sharing technology used for sharing files and information around the world. The technology itself has received a bad name because a lot of users used it to transfer copyrighted material, though I personally believe that the right to share information, copyright or not, is a right that belongs to every human being.

The technology is simple. The user runs a small torrent client, such as utorrent (one of the best torrent clients available, http://utorrent.com/). The user then can creates a torrent file from existing files on their hard drive with the torrent client. The user then shares this torrent file with other people such as friends, publicly accessible websites and the like.

The torrent file that is created is a small file that contains information about the files you are looking to download, as well as a small list of servers known in the torrent world as trackers. The tracker is a server that allows each individual downloading a specified torrent file to find other users downloading the same file. Since torrent technology is based off of the users, the trackers are only used for each individual to connect to each other. The trackers do not host or transfer any of the content. This results in a network of people who upload and download from each other - sharing files, programs, movies, music and more.

Above I noted that Torrent technology is a 'distributed file sharing network'. Each individual can download a torrent and load it into their torrent client, from their the client talks to a tracker and finds out who else is uploading or downloading the file. At this point, the torrent client will go out and connect to the other clients listed by the tracker, and request parts of the file. The remote client will start sending your client parts of the download. Your client will connect to every client that is online at that time, and start downloading all the parts of your download from many different locations, clients and sources.

Websites, such as thepiratebay.org or theghostbay.org, allow users to post torrent files up for others to download. There are many torrent sites available on the internet today, but because of the amount of copy righted material being shared, these sites get a bad name. Some people, such as the companies who's copyrighted information is being shared, deliberately use torrent sites to spread malicious software, or Trojan viruses, in an attempt to discourage the sharing of their information - It is wise to always run an anti-virus program, and scan your downloaded files before you run them. If you do not have an anti-virus program, there is a free one available. I highly recommend AVG Anti-virus. You can get it for free from http://free.avg.com/ - I run it on all my computers. It doesn't hassle you to upgrade or anything weird like that, just a simple and reliable basic anti-virus program.

Some of the basic torrent terminology:

A Seed is someone who has 100% of the files a torrent file has to offer. Also known as Seeders.

A Leecher is someone who is downloading a torrent file and does not have 100% of the file. Sometimes a leecher refers to someone who downloads a file and does not seed it to the rest of the community.

DHT stands for distributed hash table. This is a form of tracker that allows users to connect to each other without using a regular tracker. Each user has a list of other users online, and each user shares it with each other. A client only need connect to one person who uses DHT in
order to take part in the "swarm".

A Swarm is a group of clients online that use DHT. Much like a bees nest, each client would be like a bee delivering a piece of information to the hive, creating a mesh of information that is shared across the internet.

Torrent technology is used today by millions of people, Colleges and Universities use it as well. You can use it to send large files, or many small files. When you are downloading a large torrent file, you can shut your computer down in the middle of the download and it will resume where you left off when you start it up again. Use it to share family vacation photos or video with the rest of your family. Use it to back up your work files at home, or visa-versa.

I would recommend torrent technology to anyone who wants to be part of a world wide network of people who dedicate themselves to furthering the human race without placing a dollar value on it.

Very well-written starter's guide. Seeders, leechers, and swarms - it's quite an ecosystem isn't it? By the way, congratulations on TGB, it must have taken a lot of work to get a site like that up and running. Now comes the hard part - spreading the word.
